Overview

Travel to different regions of Colombia to experience the biological diversity and observe the fauna and flora of each location. During the tour you may see spectacled bears, pink dolphins, monkeys and rodents of various species, armadillos, anteaters, hummingbirds and birds of different ecosystems. You’ll visit the Andean forest, lowland areas, páramos and the Pacific Coast. You’ll get to know different species of plants such as bromeliads, heliconias, orchids, anthuriums, fruit and other timber trees.

Day 1: Arrive at Bogotá

Day 2: Visit Chingaza Natural Park, Paramo ecosystem and high altitude hummers

Day 3: Visit Chicaque Natural Park

Day 4: Flight to Leticia the capital city of the Colombian Amazon region and transfer to Calanoa Lodge

Day 5 and 6: Amazon Jungle exploration

Day 7: Transfer back to Leticia and Flight to Villavicencio. 4×4 Ground transfer to Puerto Gaitán and Mururito Lodge

Day 8 and 9: Explore the area of llanos orientales

International flight, arrival in Bogotá and transfer to hotel. Free afternoon.

 Day 2

Early in the morning, we will leave for Chingaza Natural National Park and its surroundings; we visit the Páramo, an ecosystem important for retaining and storing water, get to know its vegetation and how it has adapted to the climate. If we are lucky, we will see spectacled bears and white-tailed deer. On the way back, we´ll see several varieties of hummingbirds and other species.

Overnight in Bogotá.

 Day 3

Leaving in the morning, we´ll visit the Chicaque Natural Park, a private Reserve on the western side of the eastern mountain range (cordillera).  It is a place of great beauty and biological diversity in plants and birds.

In the afternoon we return to Bogotá. Overnight at the hotel.

 Day 4

After breakfast we drive to the airport for the flight to Leticia, capital of the Amazonas department. Upon arrival, we go to the port and take a boat to the nature reserve where we will stay.  We’ll go for an evening walk to watch and listen to the many nocturnal insects.

In the morning we´ll walk through the jungle and take in its fauna and flora; then visit the floodable rainforest looking for the animals of this ecosystem. In the evening we look for alligators near the hotel.

 Day 6

Early in the morning, we will take a small boat to key points on the Amazon River to watch and photograph birds. After breakfast we depart for Tarapoto Lakes to see more bird species. On the way back, we look for grey and pink freshwater dolphins. Return to the hotel and maybe another night walk.

 Day 7

Early morning, we leave for Leticia for the flight to Bogotá, then on to the eastern plains.  Once in Villavicencio, we will take a 4×4 to a 2,000 hectare private reserve where a great diversity of birds, mammals and plants are protected.

 Day 8

Morning walk through the woods and surrounding areas looking for birds and animals such as the giant armadillo, giant otter, ocelot, puma, jaguarundi, tapir, anteater or palmero (giant anteater), tatabro or zaino, white-tailed deer, red brocket, hedgehog, boruga, guagua or lapa, red squirrel,  among others.

After lunch, we do some more exploring and then observe sunset in the mountains.

 Day 9

Early in the morning we look for birds near the house, and then visit other sectors looking for more mammals and birds. We also learn more about this region’s ecosystems. At night we a walk through the woods to observe the area’s wild nightlife.

Leaving early, we drive to Villavicencio and then fly to Pereira, by way of Bogotá. We will take a 4×4 transport to the Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna.  Arrive at hotel early evening.

We will hike various routes in this protected and well- conserved area indicative of the Andean forests for much of the day. We can see many species of birds, howler monkeys, other mammals, and amphibians, as well as interesting vegetation.

There’s time for a morning walk before we drive to Manizales to an ecolodge where you can see almost 200 species of birds and a great variety of butterflies. We go to the best places to take photos and travel along the different paths specially designed for these activities.

In the morning we look for some species found along the trails and attraction sites. Then we move on to the Río Blanco reserve where we see more bird species and interesting vegetation. Overnight at the reserve.

There’s time to visit more of Río Blanco Reserve before we go to the town of Jardín in the department of Antioquia. Here we can observe the Andean Cock of the Rock and the Yellow-eared Parrot, two emblematic bird species known for their beautiful appearance.

We can explore more of the area looking for birds and animals before leaving for the city of Medellín. Free time and overnight in the city.

From Medellin we fly to Bahía Solano, then drive to the township of Valle and the hotel.  Along the way, we stop to look for the Baudó Oropendola, a threatened native bird,  and other important bird species. After lunch at our hotel, we visit the area to see its flora and fauna.

Walk a trail where you can appreciate the diversity of birds up to a colony of oropendolas. Along the trail , we can see the lush greenery and the diversity of amphibians and reptiles as well as insects and mammals

Early in the morning, we will look for more birds, reptiles, butterflies and vegetation that live along the Valle river. We can see that each ecosystem has its own interesting group of species. Free afternoon of  resting or walking.

We leave in the morning for Ensenada de Utría, where we tour the mangrove ecosystem with its different species of plants and birds.

Return to the airport with possibly some birdwatching stops along the way. Fly to Medellín and end of our itinerary. Return to your country of origin or connect to flights in Bogotá.
